Morning Coffee #57: Past Tense… aka Give It Some Time

The euphoria that followed many Nigerians after the 2015 elections is something I think about every now and then. People were excited. The dawn of a new era. They spoke about the changes that were going to take place in the nation. So many speculations. However, time passed. Sentiments slowly changed.

A couple of weeks ago, the #BussItChallenge was all over social media. Only for the #SilhouetteChallenge to take over. For those who missed both challenges, don’t fret. With the way things are, another one is on the horizon.

My thoughts this morning are about how fleeting a lot of things we put stock in are irrelevant overtime and how hard it is for a lot of people to discern what is important and what isn’t necessary. I know a guy who constantly sends news updates to a WhatsApp group I’m in and I find him exhausting to say the least. I think I’m one of those people who has stopped reading news articles or watching news stations, not because I’m special but because I’ve seen the TV show The Newsroom and the film Nightcrawler. Think about what has been reported as breaking news in the last year and think about what is still relevant today. Asides the pandemic, the #EndSARS protests, and Joe Biden’s election into the White House, I don’t think any other thing mattered as much.

So why-in-the-name-of-all-that-is-just would I spend my time on everything that comes to my attention? Look, if you’re reading this now and you don’t feel this is important enough for you, I would totally support you closing this tab. It is perfectly understandable to me. But what I will not do is give attention to what I don’t think is relevant to me in that moment. It might be relevant in the future but as the Book of Ecclesiastes says, there is time for everything.

I’m just here trying to get enough done before my time is up. There’s no need to join every trend or get caught up with mass emotional manipulation.
